Federer cruises into second round of US Open

NEW YORK (AFP) - World number one Roger Federer began his quest for a sixth consecutive US Open title and 16th Grand Slam singles crown by overpowering US teen wild card Devin Britton 6-1, 6-3, 7-5.

The Swiss star, who completed a career Grand Slam by winning the French Open and set a career record with his 15th Slam title at Wimbledon, became the first player to crack 50 million dollars in career prize money with the victory on Monday.

Federer, seeking his 62nd career title, advanced to a second-round match with 65th-rated German Simon Greul, who ousted 182nd-ranked Ecuadoran qualifier Giovanni Lapentti 6-3, 4-6, 3-6, 6-0, 7-6 (11/9).

"It was a good start," Federer said. "Tricky match for me, playing a guy who's got absolutely nothing to lose."

Britton, the 1,370th-ranked US college champion who lost his only prior top-level match, was outclassed from the start at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

"Everything he does is unbelievable. He's the best. No weakness," Britton said. "I mean, I didn't know what to do. It was a little overwhelming."

US fifth seed Andy Roddick and Russian eighth seed Nikolay Davydenko also reached the second round with straight-set triumphs on the first day of the year's last major tournament.

Roddick fired 13 aces and connected on 81 percent of his first serves to oust Germany's 84th-ranked Bjorn Phau 6-1, 6-4, 6-2, in 95 minutes. Serving had been a concern after some lackluster performances in US Open tuneup events.

"That's a welcome sign," Roddick said. "Hopefully I can keep it going."

Roddick will next face 81st-rated Frenchman Marc Gicquel, who eliminated Russia's Dmitry Tursunov 6-2, 5-7, 6-3, 6-3.

"I have no reason to look past my next match," Roddick said.

Davydenko, a 2006 and 2007 US Open semi-finalist, beat 222nd-ranked German qualifier Dieter Kindlmann 6-3, 6-4, 7-5 and next faces Czech No. 70 Jan Hernych, who ousted Germany's Rainer Schuettler 1-6, 7-6 (7/5), 6-4, 2-6, 6-3.

"It's very important to find your game here for the next round," Davydenko said. "Being two times in the semi-finals here has been great for me."

Top seed Federer, a semi-finalist or better in the past 21 Grand Slams, improved to 48-7 in 2009 with his 36th consecutive US Open match victory, including one walkover.

Federer, who has not lost on the Flushing Meadows hardcourts since David Nalbandian beat him in the round of 16 in 2003, seeks to match US 1920s-star Bill Tilden's modern Grand Slam and tournament record of six titles in a row.

"It's amazing. That's what I'm here for, trying to equal Bill Tilden's record," Federer said. "It's fantastic to be compared to someone who played such a long time ago."

After reclaiming the top ranking from Rafael Nadal with his Wimbledon title, Federer can keep the spot by reaching the US Open's fourth round. An earlier exit opens the door for Nadal or Britain's Andy Murray to become number one.

Federer won 12 of the first 13 points over Britton, holding serve twice on his way to a 3-0 lead after only five minutes and cruising even after falling behind by a break in the second and third sets.

"He had some very good spells and I had to make sure from my side that I stayed with him and come back because I was down a break in the second and in the third, so it was good to still get through in three sets," Federer said.

Britton, 18, dropped the first set in 18 minutes but broke for a 3-1 lead in the second, only to have Federer break back immediately.

"I was thinking, 'I'm up a break. This is exciting,'" Britton said. "It was fun for that 10 or 15 seconds until he broke me at love. It was probably the best seconds of my life."

Britton broke Federer in the seventh game of the final set only to have Federer break back in the next game.

"He looks unbelievable on TV but playing against it was even tougher," said Britton. "It was so scary. I was pretty scared."

Federer broke again in the final game, claiming the match on a crosscourt forehand winner.

"His forehand is just crazy," Britton said. "I tried to keep it away, but sometimes I just hit it there just to see it. It's really pretty to watch."

Tuesday's schedule finds Scottish second seed Murray, the 2008 US Open runner-up, starting his bid against Latvian Ernests Gulbis. Serbian fourth seed Novak Djokovic opens against Croatian Ivan Ljubicic.

Roddick happy to play for the late-night "crazies"

Tue, 01 Sep 06:44:00 2009

Andy Roddick closed Monday's opening night at the U.S. Open before a sparse crowd of "crazies" at Arthur Ashe Stadium after taking the stage at about 11:15 p.m.

He said it was all part of the show.

"It's just unique," the fifth-seeded American told reporters after his 6-1 6-4 6-2 demolition of Bjorn Phau of Germany.

"You play in all sorts of atmospheres. You know, there's not as many people, but the ones that are there sure are vocal/drunk."

Roddick agreed with the suggestion that the boisterous crowd that stays into the wee hours were "crazies."

"I think so," he said. "I guarantee half the people out there were probably here all day, too. They have to be pretty passionate and really enjoy what they're seeing and the whole experience of it.

"It's one in the morning. I guarantee you, they all have to work tomorrow. They certainly have to get up earlier than I do.

"It is kind of unique and pretty cool."

Roddick said the special character of the different grand slams help make tennis interesting.

"It's all part of our game," he said. "We don't play on the same surface. We don't use the same balls. We don't play in the same place. It's all different all the time.

"The thing that makes Wimbledon so cool is the tradition and the whites. I get into that when I'm there. I love it. I think it's great.

"I think the equivalent of that here is the night sessions and the craziness, the fact that it's a show and it's an event as well as a tennis tournament.

US Open - Efficient Murray eases through

Eurosport - Wed, 02 Sep 12:29:00 2009

[فقط الأعضاء المسجلين والمفعلين يمكنهم رؤية الوصلات . إضغط هنا للتسجيل]

Britain's Andy Murray disposed of his first-round opponent Ernests Gulbis in straight sets 7-5 6-3 7-5 at the US Open.
The second seed was clinical in overcoming the abundantly talented Latvian, breaking at key points in each set with real efficiency and conviction.

Both players started very briskly with just one point being taken against the serve in the opening three games as Gulbis, in particular, served belligerently.

Murray confounded his opponent's dominance on serve with a deft variety of returns to play havoc with the Latvian's rhythm. It worked: the Brit broke serve in the sixth game with Gulbis committing two unforced errors to hand over the initiative.

But the world number 95 hit back emphatically in the next game, embracing his ultra-aggressive approach and breaking with two huge forehands and a blistering backhand winner to restore parity.

Gulbis's mentality is often brought into question, but he thrived under the lights and saved a set point at 5-4 down with a monstrous ace after Murray had carved out a promising opening.

It was then the second seed's turn to stave off a break point, delivering a crisply-struck serve out wide to Gulbis's backhand before he teed up three further set points at 6-5 up.

Gulbis recovered superbly to force the game to deuce from 0-40, but Murray was undeterred and brought up a fourth before securing the opening set with a flashing forehand on the run.

The Brit's momentum continued unabated as Gulbis wavered on his serve early in the second set, and Murray capitalised on the second of three break points to assume the ascendancy once more.

To the Latvian's credit he showed good application in fighting back and his reward came in the seventh game as he broke Murray to love with an array of searing groundstrokes to get back on terms.

However, Murray was prudent enough to keep the Latvian's fleeting brilliance in perspective and he re-established his advantage in the very next game.

As Gulbis's patience began to wane, Murray forced his increasingly agitated opponent to play off the back foot and sealed the second set by slamming a backhand winner down the line.

The third set was a cagey affair as Gulbis demonstrated that, contrary to popular belief, he does possesses a fighting spirit and he twice thwarted Murray's attempts to convert break points.

The onus frequently turned on Murray to hold, serving second as Gulbis battled on, but the breakthrough finally came at 5-5 as the Latvian crumbled under pressure.

Murray dealt a decisive blow with a dashing forehand winner down the line and was presented with an opportunity to serve out for the match which he duly accepted with a minimum of fuss.

The world number two performed a bizarre jig to celebrate his victory over the mercurial Gulbis, and he will now face Paul Capdeville of Chile in the second round.

US Open - Women: Safina survives big scare

Eurosport - Wed, 02 Sep 09:43:00 2009

Dinara Safina barely resembled a player rated as the best in women's tennis as she stuttered and stumbled her way into the US Open second round with a 6-7 6-2 6-4 win over little-known Australian Olivia Rogowska.

[فقط الأعضاء المسجلين والمفعلين يمكنهم رؤية الوصلات . إضغط هنا للتسجيل]

The Russian was in danger of suffering the humiliation of becoming the first women's top seed to perish in the first round of the US Open as she littered the Arthur Ashe Stadium with a heap of unforced errors.

Trailing 3-0 in the deciding set, Safina's appearance in New York looked set to be a fleeting one but she managed to save face by subduing the plucky challenge of the 167th-ranked Rogowska after two hours 35 minutes of see-saw action.

With her movement around court being anything but smooth, the Russian was a constant source of free points for Rogowska as she racked up a jaw-dropping 11 double faults and 48 unforced errors.

She led 5-3 in the first set and blew four set points as she misfired shots far and wide, leaving her coach Zeljko Krajan to shake his head in frustration as he watched on from the stands.

The 18-year-old Rogowska had been expected to be a mere stepping stone in Safina's journey to the latter rounds but instead chose to rattle her more illustrious opponent by taking the opening set on a double fault.

Safina pulled rank in the second set but the jitters again returned during the decider before she finally let out a huge sigh of relief after realising she had just spared herself from earning a dubious distinction at the Open.

The 23-year-old, who described her win as "a little bit ugly," will be looking for a vast improvement in form when she takes on Kristina Barrois in the next round.

Germany's 67th-ranked Barrois beat Poland's Urszula Radwanska 6-4 6-4.

Ana Ivanovic discovered there was no where to hide at Flushing Meadows as she slumped out of the US Open in the first round with a 2-6 6-3 7-6 defeat by Ukrainian Kateryna Bondarenko .

The Serbian 11th seed, who has struggled with her form all season, was beaten in the opening round of a major for the first time in her career.

Ivanovic opted to take refuge under the tournament's official towel during the changeovers but that failed to put off Bondarenko, who saved a match point before burying the 2008 French Open champion's title hopes.

The 21-year-old Ivanovic looked to have staged a great escape when she clawed back from a break down in the decider and then watched Bondarenko double fault on her first match point.

But the Ukrainian never lost belief and sealed a memorable victory after almost two and a half hours of high drama when Ivanovic smacked a forehand into the net.

Jelena Jankovic, runner-up last year to Serena Williams, kicked off her US campaign with a 6-2 6-3 victory over Italian Roberta Vinci.

The fifth-seeded Jankovic needed third-set tie-breaks to beat Vinci in their two previous meetings, but wasted little time in Louis Armstrong Stadium to advance to the second round.

The 24-year-old Serb, who committed just 11 unforced errors in outclassing her opponent, served a love-game to end the 63-minute match when the Italian's service return sailed long.

Reigning French Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova shook off a slow start to advance, the Russian sixth seed ousting Germany's Julia Goerges 6-3 6-2.

Kuznetsova, who won her first of two career Grand Slam singles titles at the 2004 US Open, next faces Latvia's 96th-ranked Anastasija Sevastova, who ousted Thailand's 90th-rated Tamarine Tanasugarn 6-3, 7-5.

The 2004 champion needed only 62 minutes to move on, winning 10 of the final 12 games and rescuing three break points in the second set to hold off 92nd-ranked Goerges.

The 2006 champion Maria Sharapova made a stylish return to Flushing Meadows, walloping Bulgaria's Tsvetana Pironkova 6-3 6-0, while fourth seed Elena Dementieva was far too strong for France's Camille Pin running out a 6-1 6-2 winner.

China's Peng Shuai, a possible fourth-round foe for Safina, opened with a 6-2 6-3 victory over Slovakia's Jarmila Groth. Peng next faces Belgian Yanina Wickmayer, who ousted French 16th seed Virginie Razzano 6-4 6-3.

Danish ninth seed Caroline Wozniacki defeated Kazakh Galina Voskoboeva 6-4 6-0 and next faces Croatian qualifier Petra Martic, who eliminated France's Severine Bremond 6-4 6-2.

US Open - Sublime Federer remains on track

Eurosport - Thu, 10 Sep 20:44:00 2009
Buzz Up!

Five-times champion Roger Federer weathered a mighty Swedish storm before beating 12th seed Robin Soderling 6-0 6-3 6-7(6) 7-6(6) to reach the semi-finals of the US Open at Flushing Meadows.

Gusting winds and the magic of Federer threw Soderling off course in a first set that flashed by in just 25 minutes on an unseasonably cool night at Flushing Meadows.

Yet, just when it seemed that Federer would blow away Soderling to roll into his 22nd consecutive Grand Slam semi-final, the Swede perked up and set pulses racing for over an hour as he inched towards an unlikely upset.

"It feels great. It was so close towards the end. It's just a great relief to come through because Robin started playing better and better as the match went on," said Federer, who will take on fourth seed Novak Djokovic for a place in Sunday's showpiece.

"I knew he was going to be tough.

"The beginning was a bit too easy. All of a sudden he fought his way into the match and showed what a great player he is.

"I had a really good start. I thought it was cold so I think I felt at home being from Switzerland. Then it got even cooler and him being from Sweden I think that played in his favour," joked the top seed.

"I thought it was a great match towards the end."

His victim added: "I never played anyone who played that well in windy conditions... but it's tough to play worse than I did in the first two sets, so it could only get better."

Soderling entered the match with a 0-11 record against the all-conquering Swiss and looked to be heading towards another mauling as he did not register on the scoreboard until holding for 1-1 in the second set.

But that only turned into a brief respite as he was powerless to stop Federer from breezing through it in double quick time, sparking a mass exodus from Arthur Ashe Stadium.

But if the thousands of fans who streamed out early had stuck around for only a few more minutes, they would have seen the tide turning as Soderling suddenly warmed up to the task.

He crafted two break points in the sixth game but could only shake his head in disbelief as Federer fired down two thunderbolt deliveries to get out himself out of a corner.

The 15-times Grand Slam champion looked to be heading for another straight-sets win when he steamed ahead 4-0 in the tie-break but to the astonishment of the crowd, he was overtaken.

The Swedish 12th seed, who was runner-up to Federer in the French Open final, hit back with some crafty forehands to strike back and snatch it 8-6.

As the clock crept towards the midnight hour, Federer looked like a man who was being forced to work over-time against his wishes.

But just when it seemed that the night might stretch on indefinitely, with the Swede holding set point at 6-5 in the fourth set tie-break, Federer yelled "Come On" as Soderling smacked a service return wide.

Two points later a roar rang out all over Flushing Meadows as a Soderling forehand error handed Federer victory at 12.09 am local time, allowing him to reach his 22nd consecutive Grand Slam semi-final.

"It's probably one of the greatest records for me in my personal career. I'm just happy it keeps on going," said the 28-year-old, who would match Bill Tilden's championship run in the 1920s with a sixth successive title here.

"I'm healthy, I guess that's most important because that's what allows me to play well in majors, for a shot again to defend my title."

US Open - Wozniacki ends Oudin run in quarters

Eurosport - Thu, 10 Sep 20:47:00 2009

[فقط الأعضاء المسجلين والمفعلين يمكنهم رؤية الوصلات . إضغط هنا للتسجيل]

The 19-year-old Wozniacki belted deep groundstrokes off both wings and waited for Oudin to make mistakes, and the diminutive Georgia native complied with 43 unforced errors.

The Dane's penetrating backhands drew a slew of forehand errors from Oudin and silenced the Arthur Ashe Stadium crowd that had helped lift the American in earlier upsets.

Wozniacki, who has won three tournaments this year including the New Haven warm-up to the Open, became the first Danish woman to reach the semi-finals of a Grand Slam tournament since tennis turned professional in 1968.

"I've never passed the fourth round before," she said. "When I made the quarter-finals I was so happy. Now I'm in the semi-finals and hopefully I can try and win the next match."

The 70th-ranked Oudin had become the darling of the tournament for her gritty comeback wins after coming to last year's tournament as a lowly ranked wildcard.

She had won her last three matches after dropping the opening set, including a third-round defeat of former champion Maria Sharapova - but could not work her magic against Wozniacki, rated eighth in the world.

"She's such a strong player, she doesn't give you anything for free," Oudin said.

Oudin was asked to address the crowd in a rare loser's turn in the on-court interview.

"This has been a great experience for me. I've had a great run," said Oudin. "Caroline played a great match today. I hope to come back next year and do even better."

Wozniacki dominated from the start, breaking Oudin's serve in the second game and again in the sixth for a 5-1 lead.

The Dane fought off a pair of break points to hold for 2-1 in the second set and did so again on her next serve on her way to winning the last four games to close out the match.

The Dane reached the final four against unseeded Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium, who beat Kateryna Bondarenko of Ukraine 7-5 6-4 in her quarter-final match.

"I have nothing to lose," Wozniacki said. "I'm in the semi-finals of a Grand Slam."

The winner of the Wozniacki-Wickmayer match will face the victor of the semi-final between champion Serena Williams and 2005 winner Kim Clijsters, making a comeback after taking more than two years off to start a family.

Del Potro into US Open semis

Thu, 10 Sep 23:54:20 2009

[فقط الأعضاء المسجلين والمفعلين يمكنهم رؤية الوصلات . إضغط هنا للتسجيل]

NEW YORK (AFP) - Argentina's Juan Martin del Potro converted eight of eight break points to reach the semi-finals of the US Open on Thursday with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-1 win over Marin Cilic of Croatia.

In a battle between two giant 20-year-olds, sixth-seeded Del Potro started slowly before wresting control of the match away from Cilic midway through the second set.

He will go on to play the winner of the night match between third seed Rafael Nadal of Spain and Chilean 11th seed Fernando Gonzalez for a place in Sunday's final.

The other semi-final will oppose title-holder and top seed Roger Federer of Switzerland against third-seeded Novak Djokovic of Serbia.

"In a big match like today you are going to feel nervous at the start, but I fought until the final of it," Del Potro said.

"The windy conditions were tough for both players but I stayed so focussed on my serve and I never missed an easy ball.

"I am very happy to be in the semis and want to be in the final but both players will be tough for me."

Cilic, playing in his first Grand Slam quarter-final, grabbed the first break of serve in the fifth game, converting his third break point with a tremendous running forehand whipped down the line for a 3-2 lead.

He held serve three more times to take the set, displaying all the attacking skills that destroyed the tournament's second seed, Britain's Andy Murray, in the quarter-finals.

Cilic broke again to open the second set and he held onto that until the sixth game, when the Croatian served up four straight unforced errors on the forehand side to gift Del Potro his first break of the match.

From 3-3, Del Potro, bidding to become the first South American champion in New York since Guillermo Vilas in 1977, took control of the exchanges, stepping up his own game at a time when Cilic started to fade, especially on his forehand side.

The Argentinian made it five games in a row to level the set score and then won the first two of the second set to take command of the match, outplaying and out-thinking the Croatian.

Del Potro took the third set 6-2 and when he broke Cilic again to open the fourth set, the Croatian looked a beaten man.

Civic, who was inspired as a boy by former Wimbledon champion Goran Ivanisevic, had no answer by this stage to the heavier hitting of the South American, who moved out relentlessly with seven games in a row to take the set 6-0 and the match in 2 hours 33 minutes

It will be the second Grand Slam semi-final of the year for Del Potro, who took Roger Federer to five sets in the last four of the French Open in early June.

Something old, something new in women's semis

Fri, 11 Sep 00:35:00 2009

Something old and something new distinguish the women's semi-finals at the U.S. Open on Friday when young and seasoned rivalries will determine combatants for the singles crown.

Champion Serena Williams and comeback mum Kim Clijsters, who first met on court at Flushing Meadows 10 years ago, open the final-four matches, followed by a clash of 19-year-olds Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark and Belgian Yanina Wickmayer.

Williams, who won her maiden contest against Clijsters as a 17-year-old on her way to winning the 1999 Open, leads the series 7-1.

Remarkably, they have not met in more than six years, and Williams said Clijsters was more dangerous than ever.

"She has absolutely nothing to lose," second seed Williams said about the 26-year-old Belgian's fast climb back to grand slam contention after a mere month back in competition.

"I think that's when you can play your ultimate best."

Clijsters, with 18-month-old daughter Jada along for her first grand slam ride since the 2007 Australian Open, said she would turn counter-puncher against big-hitting Williams.

"I think the one who keeps the unforced errors down is going to get through. She's obviously someone who plays with a lot of power, and is still a great mover," said Clijsters.

"Every player always has a moment in a match where, whether it's either one or two games, where they just kind of lose that aggressiveness a little bit or just lose focus.

"You really have to try to just step it up when you feel that things are really like twisting your way a little bit."

Clijsters, the 2005 champion, beat 2007 Wimbledon runner-up Marion Bartoli and seven-times grand slam singles winner Venus Williams, but needed three sets to do it.

Williams has breezed through without the loss of a set, using her big serve to set the tone, which she underlined by wearing a T-shirt reading, "Serving Up Some Hot Damn," after her quarter-final win over Italian Flavia Pennetta.

"It means what it means," she said by way of explanation. "Just serving up some hot stuff."

Wozniacki, who has three tournament wins this year including victory in the New Haven run-up event for the Open, warmed up for her first grand slam semi with two huge wins.

RIGHT DECISIONS

The Dane ousted former Open winner and Roland Garros champion Svetlana Kuznetsova in the fourth round before sending tournament Cinderella Melanie Oudin home in the quarters.

"I'm thinking well on the court. I think that I make the right decisions. I think that I'm a fighter. I run well, but I'm also capable of changing the rhythm, be aggressive," Wozniacki said in a thumb-nail appraisal of her game.

"I think I'm an all around player.

Wickmayer and eighth-ranked Wozniacki may not be well known to most of the National Tennis Centre crowd but they have known each other since their pre-teen tennis days.

"I know her really well from the juniors and we've played each other growing up," Wozniacki said about the unseeded Belgian. "I think we met each other when we were we were both under-12. That's many years back."

Wickmayer, ranked 50th, flew through the top quarter of the draw under the radar, beating the only seed she faced, 16th-seeded Virginie Razzano of France, in the first round.

Her fourth-round victim, Petra Kvitova of Czech Republic, eliminated top-seeded world number one Dinara Safina.

"I'm really playing under a lot of confidence. Before this my best (grand slam) result was second round," Wickmayer said.

"So of course when you get to the third, fourth round, you start surprising yourself. But actually, I've been staying pretty calm. I've worked really hard for this."

Wickmayer said she most admired Clijsters, who could be standing across the net from her in Saturday night's final.

"Let's hope," she said. "Let's all hope we can meet each other in the final.

"But let's be honest. We both have a really tough match in front of us. She has Serena in front of her which is going to be a great match and I'm really excited to see that one."
