Sir Alex Ferguson versus Arsene Wenger. It is impossible to think of one man without the other.
When Manchester United take on Arsenal in this FA Cup fifth-round tie, irrespective of what teams are selected, the managers will both have the same burning desire to win. There is history between these two clubs and managers, and, in describing both, the appropriate word is great.
Bearing in mind the saying that no one is perfect, let us try to spot the strengths and weaknesses of these rival
footballing icons

First Ferguson.
His strengths.
# He cannot and will not tolerate defeat. In public, he may never blame his team for losing, but, in private, they will know if it was their fault.
# He knows the heartbeat of Manchester United and understands how the fans expect their team to play.
# He has a caring and positive side that he shows to the people he can trust.
# His knowledge of the game is second to none.
# He has an excellent sense of humour.
# He is a control freak, as all top managers are.

His weaknesses.
# He blames match officials publicly too much.
# He criticises the media for pretty much everything.
# He holds grudges for too long.
# He struggles to understand the inevitability of defeat.
# He has no sense of humour when his team lose.

Now Wenger.
His strengths:
# He has a contacts' list that every other manager would die for.
# He has an acute sense for when it is time to move players on and out.
# He expects his players to act and behave sensibly and professionally in their private lives.
# He looks and plans ahead to where he wants his team and the club to be.
# He does not suffer fools gladly.
# He is a control freak, as all top managers are.

His weaknesses.
# He is stubborn, and finds it difficult sometimes to accept the blindingly obvious.
# He is intelligent enough to know that you cannot win every game, but struggles to cope when his team lose.
# He does not like criticising his players even when they deserve it.
# He never sees his players as guilty of misconduct on the pitch.
# He disagrees too often with match officials on the touchline.
# He is a control freak, as all top managers are.


Both have transformed English football, but one thing neither has changed, is their competitive spirit and, while the traditional clashes between United and Liverpool and Arsenal and Spurs were and still are games to look forward to, the matches between Manchester United and Arsenal have, in the last decade, become the ones to stir the blood.
